THE RACE

Yesterday Karitane school went up
to Macraes, the bus went languidly along the road.
It took one hour.
But time flew so quickly.
 First race was year ones.
My sister came first place.  I was excited and proud of her.
Next race was year twos.  The third race was year threes
and fours.  I came first.  I liked the run most of all
because I like running more than swimming and biking.
Last race was year five and sixes,  and also big Louis won
and came first place.
After we had a sausage sizzle then we travelled back.
We watched a slide show of the triathlon and we got ICE BLOCKS!

Duathlon

On Friday we were supposed to go to the Macraes triathlon but it ended out we had to stay at school so we had to do the duathlon which is  two sports to participate in.  They were bike and run.  I had to be the official photographer - it was fun until poor Kutlo fell off his bike but he got up and tried again.  It was hard to take photos because everybody wanted a photo.   In the year 1 race at the start Ella fell over but did not cry - just got up again.  Maybe she was last but she just kept going. I think Ella and Kutlo should of come first.   Liam came first, I don't know who came second.  By Dylan - blogger of the week.

Art

We have looked at a creation myth from Japan and created some card prints from the story.  We used layers of card and other found objects to create texture.  We used layers to create depth in our compositions.  We also put more detail in the foreground and less in the background to help create a sense of space.

The Indian in the Cupboard

We have finished the 'Wind in the Willows' and now we are reading 'The Indian in the Cupboard' by Lynne Reid Banks as our read aloud.  We are about half way through and are absolutely enthralled by the goings-on of Omri, Patrick, Little Bull and Boone.  We just can't wait to see what will happen next.  This week, Mrs P read us a good description of Little Bull and then we drew him from our imaginations.  Some people then shrank their drawings so that he was the actual size in the book - 7 cm!
Here are some of the ways we think of Little Bull...

THE GOING ONS

A few days ago we made dioramas on the wind in the willows. And we wrote about
what was happening in our dioramas or how our characters were feeling. Also we
made bugs with coloured stuff.  It was
fun. Later
Dylan got to be einstein on mathletics because he was good at it!

Writing, writing, writing...

The Seniors have been writing up a storm in the last few weeks!  We have been writing on own choice topics.  Some children are writing imaginative 'made-up' stories, some are writing recounts about their daily lives and some are writing poetry.
One form of poem that we have been exploring is the picture quatrain.  Some children are adapting this form into their own organic piece of writing.  Ka Pai Seniors - you rock!
Here are some published works from Sumon, Sam Hay, Sam Davies and Jessie.

Marine Metre Squared

Metre Squared at Puketeraki

On Monday 4th March the Senior room took part in the Metre Squared Workshop at Puketeraki.  We left school with Brendan (from the runaka) and walked along to the far end of Karitane beach near the big rocks.  We put our metre squares in the rock pools and used the rocky shore guide to identify all the things we saw.  We were amazed at what was there when you looked that closely!  We recorded this information on a tally chart which we are going to enter on the Marine Metre Squared website (www.mm2.net.nz)  Check it out.  You can compare our data with other regions in New Zealand.  We intend to do this regularly so that we can compare our data at different times of the year and from year to year, to see how things change.
