Term Three Read Aloud...

Well, we enjoyed 'Lionboy' so much that we have talked Mrs P. into reading the second book of the trilogy - 'Lionboy - the Chase'.  This book continues the exciting story of Charlie Ashanti, who is on the hunt for his parents who have been kidnapped.  Along the way he rescues a pride of Lions, gains enemies and visits Venice and North Africa.  We are really loving this series of books and finding out a little bit about geography on the way!

The truth about brussels sprouts

We read a story, called The truth about brussels sprouts.
We investigated about brussels sprouts in our school and this is want we found.
13 people liked brussels sprouts, 7 people had never had them and only 10 people didn't like them.

How to Weave Paper

You will need:
  • about five paperclips
  • two pieces of coloured paper (different colours)
  • a pair of scissors
Steps
  1. Fold a piece of paper in half and clip the unfolded side of the paper with the paperclips.
  2. At the folded edge, cut at least 2 cm wide and 2cm away from the unfolded edge.
  3. Open the paper.
  4. Cut strips of the other piece of paper about 2cm wide (the strips should be longer than the other piece of paper).
  5. Weave the strips over and under the slits in the other piece of paper.
  6. Cut off the extra pieces of paper and tape the ends of paper.
  7. You're done!

We have been learning how to write instructions in the Senior Room.  This ties in with our work in Science on Energy - writing about experiments etc.  In writing we have been looking at how to write a set of instructions -  how to set them out, what language they use and so on.  In reading we have been reading instructions and trying to follow them.  Kahlil's writing is based on a reading activity...

Our New Read Aloud - LIONBOY

What do you do when you come home one day and discover that your parents have been kidnapped? Well, if you're a brave young guy named Charlie Ashanti, you go off in search of them. And since you happen to know how to speak Cat, your feline friends - the stray cats of the city and the caged lions on a magnificent, astounding floating circus, rally round you, bringing help, advice, and occasional special deliveries. Little do you know that in this search of yours, the fate of the world is at stake.

Zizou Corder is an exciting new mother/daughter writing team and this is a captivating adventure full of heroes, villains, and astounding events. Set in a near future that blends the familiar and the new in unexpected, intriguing ways, Lionboy is an exhilarating, suspenseful whirlwind of a novel.

WEE-HOO TERM TWO!!

Welcome back to Term two everyone.  We have had a bit of a change in the Senior room - our class timetable has changed, our read-aloud has changed, but the best change has been being able to welcome our four new friends to the group!  Welcome Brook, Sam D, Wil and B'Kay - we are very proud to have you join our class!

Mini-ball training has started hard-out and we thank Helen R and Aroha who are our fabulous coaches.  Ben has fixed the hoops, Helen has ordered new balls and we are ready to slam dunk our way to the top of the table!

Our topic study for the term is ENERGY and Mrs W and Helen have planned all sorts of cool experiments and learning.  We are hoping to squeeze in a school trip to the Dunedin Gasworks museum to look at this topic in more depth.

Bey Blades

We are only allowed to bring Bey Blades to school on Mondays and Fridays because the teachers are sick of them.  They make too much noise.  We were only allowed them on Mondays but Sam D asked the teacher if we could have them for two days a week.  The teacher said yes.

Bert

Bert is the school pet,  he is a boy turtle.
We like Bert because he is funny.
We have him because it is nice to have something to bite the teacher.   He bit the teacher  Mrs. P on the finger once and she said it really hurt,
It was funny.
We have to feed Bert  once a day and twice on Fridays.
He is a big turtle and he is green.

A New Teacher

At the beginning of the the year, we got a new teacher.  She is so cool!  I also love it when she tells the juniors off.   Oh, and her name is 'the Onceler'  (dun dun dun) she sounds like Mrs.P.  I like to tease her by saying "hi Mrs.P.'' When she tells the juniors off I "say go Mrs.P.''  She  is also our art teacher.  She can be strict and she can be really funny when she wants to be. I think she is one of the best teachers we've ever had. ;)

be-uke-aful ukeleles

Look at our beautiful new ukeleles!  We have been busy practising and can now play between 3-6 chords.  The songs we are working on are Pa Mai, That's Aotearoa and (wait for it) .... The ukelele song!  When we get a little bit better, Miss T is going to teach us how to record ourselves for the blog and then you will be able to hear our sweet singing and playing.   The East Otago inaugural choral jam is coming up in April so we will be looking for parents/caregivers and members of our extended whanau to accompany us on the stage - it is a bit scary for such a small group of children to get up on the stage on their own so we need your help!

We're Here!

NOT to be outdone by the cunning juniors - I have forced Miss Trusler to teach me how to blog!  It's a hard job to teach an old dog new tricks but I am hoping that she will have more success with the Senior children who will take to it much more readily than I!  All I can say is...WATCH THIS SPACE!
